    Making sustainability measurable with connected packaging

    The smartest thing on your packaging isn't your logo — it's a governed identity

    Ask most brand managers what a QR code on packaging is for, and the answer will center on consumer engagement: a link to a campaign page, a recipe hub, a loyalty program. Those are legitimate uses. But they represent a fraction of what a standards-based connected identifier is actually capable of — and they reflect an era of connected packaging that the most forward-thinking brands are already moving beyond. 


    These brands are moving from QR codes as another marketing channel to QR codes as governed, operational infrastructure. The standard that makes that shift possible is GS1 Digital Link, and its implications for sustainability are significant. 


    One identifier that serves every stakeholder 


    GS1 Digital Link works by embedding a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) directly into a web-compatible Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). The result is a single, scannable identifier that is simultaneously readable by point-of-sale systems, supply chain partners, regulatory platforms, and consumer-facing applications — without requiring a different code for each use case. 


    For brands managing global product portfolios, this is a meaningful operational change. Today, a product might carry separate identifiers for retail scanning, regulatory compliance, recycling guidance, and promotional campaigns. Each one creates a separate governance burden. Each one can become out of date independently. And each one creates a separate evidence trail — or more often, no evidence trail at all. 


    A single GS1 Digital Link URI resolves all of that. The identifier stays constant. The destination content — recycling guidance, material declarations, certifications, batch-level traceability data — is managed centrally and updated without touching the physical pack. The code on the packaging does not change. Everything behind it can. 


    GS1 Digital Link is designed so that digital content can be continually updated by a brand owner without the need to change the QR code on-pack, meaning packaging or artwork does not need to be changed to provide access to updated information.  


    Localization without proliferation 


    For global brands, one of the most persistent operational challenges in sustainability is localized recycling guidance. Recycling infrastructure varies significantly by country, by region within a country, and sometimes by material type within a single local authority area. A consumer in Hamburg follows different sorting rules than a consumer in Chicago or Singapore. And guidance that is accurate for one geography may be actively misleading in another.

     
    The traditional response has been either to print the lowest-common-denominator instruction (often generic guidance that does not reflect any specific local rules), or to maintain separate packaging variants by market, which multiplies artwork complexity and print costs. 


    Connected packaging resolves this without requiring new codes or new pack variants. Because the resolver routes each scan based on context — including geography and language — a single identifier can serve localized recycling guidance to a consumer in Munich, a regulatory compliance record to an auditor in Brussels, and a batch-level trace to a supply chain partner in Singapore. The content is governed centrally. The delivery is local. The code on the pack is one. 


    The measurement layer that most brands overlook 


    There is a capability embedded in connected packaging infrastructure that goes largely unnoticed until brands are ready to use it: every scan is a data point. 


    In aggregate, scan data tells a brand which sustainability guidance is being accessed, in which markets, at what rate, and where consumers are disengaging. It reveals whether take-back prompts are driving action or being abandoned. It shows whether localized recycling instructions in a new market are performing as well as they do in established ones. 


    This is the shift from reach to signal. Traditional packaging metrics measure distribution and print run. Connected packaging metrics measure behavior, which is what regulators and ESG frameworks are increasingly asking brands to demonstrate. 


    Using the GS1 standard means you are not only providing a URL for people to scan — you are also providing GS1 identifiers, the same identifiers relied upon throughout industry today, and leveraging open global standards. That interoperability is what makes the measurement layer durable. Scan data does not belong to a single vendor or platform. It is generated through a standards-compliant interaction that any conformant scanning application can participate in.


    Future-proof by design 


    GS1 Digital Link, with GTIN as the unique identifier and a QR code resolving via the GS1 resolver to the DPP record, is now explicitly recognized as a valid identifier pattern under ESPR. For brands investing in connected packaging infrastructure, this is a material point. The identifier layer they are building today is the same one that will satisfy Digital Product Passport requirements as they roll out by product category through 2027 and beyond.  


    That is the compounding value of an open standard: the infrastructure investment made to improve recycling guidance today is the same infrastructure that meets regulatory disclosure requirements tomorrow. You are not building for one use case — you are building a foundation.
